Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz wore a Blue Bombers jersey on live TV Friday to detail his Grey Cup wager with Vancouver's Gregor Robertson – and to rib BC Lions fans about their chances.
After receiving a compliment on his outfit, Katz told CTV News Channel that "these colours are going to look even better when Mayor Robertson needs to wear them."
Part of the three-part wager will force the losing mayor to send a package of local goods to the winner.
"For example, if a miracle were to happen and the BC Lions were to be victorious – by some fluke, of course – we'd have to send them local products," Katz said.
The loser will also have to send a cash donation of $360 to a charity of the winner's choosing. The last part involves what Katz describes as "the humiliation factor."
"Mayor Robertson will have to come to Winnipeg, stand on the corner of Portage and Main wearing a Bombers jersey -- telling the world who truly is the number one football team in all of Canada," he said.
The Winnipeg mayor is no stranger to eating crow; in 2008, he traveled to Regina to declare the Saskatchewan Roughriders the best team in the nation after they defeated the Bombers 23 to 19 in the 95th Grey Cup.
Katz acknowledged that the Lions were a good team, but added that "I think the Big Blue may be just a wee bit hungrier."
"We've had a couple appetizers at the Grey Cup but haven't quite got the job done… It's time to drink from the Cup," Katz said.
But Vancouver's mayor says he's hopeful he won't have to make a trip to wintry Winnipeg anytime soon.
"I'm expecting the mayor of Winnipeg to be in downtown Vancouver with a Lions jersey on, telling us all that the Lions are number 1," he said.
