The Fraser panel of the Pacific Salmon Commission is meeting in Richmond today as calls increase for a B.C./Washington State summit to probe the collapse of Fraser River sockeye stocks.
Topping today's agenda are results of test fisheries examining sockeye heading back to the Fraser River.
Abundant returns were expected until just weeks ago when the Department of Fisheries revealed only about 1.7 million fish are estimated, leaving as many as 11 million unaccounted for.
The B.C. First Nations Fisheries Council, affected First Nations along the Fraser River and the federal Liberal caucus have all issued calls for a so-called salmon summit to consider the crisis.
