One man is dead after a shooting at a busy Richmond strip mall Saturday evening.
The shooting happened at about 6 p.m. in the parking lot of Ironwood Plaza on Steveston Highway in front of dozens of witnesses.
Paramedics rushed the 56-year-old man to hospital, but he later died.
The victim has been identified as Amarjit Singh Sandhu, a wealthy developer, prominent philanthropist, and a member of Vancouver’s Sikh Temple.
Sandhu owned Sandhill Developments, a residential and commercial construction company based in Richmond.
“The act of homicide is one that is selfish and cold. There is an extra element of concern when one chooses to commit this crime in such a bold and brazen manner in a very public setting,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound in a statement.
“Fortunately, no other individuals were injured.”
A truck in the parking lot was riddled with bullet holes. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has now taken over the case.
The shooting has left residents in the area worried.
“It scares the heck out of me. I mean you don't think that's going to happen around here but apparently it's everywhere now,” said resident Jamie Carmichael.
The motive for the shooting is not yet known, but police say it was targeted. So far no one has been arrested.
An investigation is ongoing. IHIT is asking anyone with information to contact them at 1-877-551-4448.
