B.C. Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid says schools are ready to handle an expected upsurge of the H1N1 flu virus this fall and winter.

MacDiarmid says a plan was finalized over the summer and B.C.'s chief medical officer Dr. Perry Kendall held a conference call with school district superintendents last month.

She says a key part of the plan includes notifying parents on the first day of school about precautions they and their kids should take to minimize the flu threat, including frequent hand-washing, sneezing into their sleeves and staying home from school if they feel sick.

MacDiarmid, who's a family doctor, says the education budget will allow schools to get more frequent cleaning to keep surfaces germ-free, but there's no need to use any special cleaners.

The minister says while there's no overall plan to close schools, it could be considered if the flu is worse than expected
