Parts of Vancouver's brand new convention centre were under water Monday, forcing several hundred Public Service Alliance delegates to leave the building.

A water main burst on the second floor of the massive, three storey structure at around 7 a.m., sending water gushing onto at least 5,000 square feet of carpet -- and causing damage on the first and second floors.

A convention centre official says the carpet is easy to replace because it was installed in large squares.

She says only a small area of the 470,000 square-foot centre has been affected, but hundreds of Public Service Alliance convention delegates were forced outside on Monday morning while crews turned off the water.

The convention will reconvene on Tuesday.
