A 56-year-old man has died after an early morning house fire in East Vancouver.

The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Thursday inside the home at 315 East 17th Ave.

Firefighters rescued one man from the second floor. He was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries. A second person was treated for smoke inhalation.

Two other residents were able to get out of the home safely after waking up the smell of smoke.

Crews say conditions prevented them from entering the home straightaway.

"The house was fully involved on the top floor and so we had to knock the fire down before we could get into it," said Vancouver Fire Battalion Chief Howard Brown.

About 30 firefighters battled the three alarm blaze.

It's believed the fire started on the second floor, but the cause is still under investigation. Investigators say the fire is not suspicious.
