Two Coquitlam RCMP traffic officers will appear in court later this month after being charged with assault against a driver they pulled over during a radar trap.
Const. Marko Duran, 38, and Const. Trevor Doylend, 33, are accused of assaulting a 55-year-old male driver during a traffic stop in a residential area in Coquitlam on June 17.
Police say an altercation ensued between the officers and the driver after Duran pulled the vehicle over and ticketed the driver.
During the incident the driver was removed from the vehicle by Const. Duran, with help from Const. Doylend.
The driver never questioned the incident but an investigation was ordered by a supervising officer concerned about the arrest.
"The supervisor reviewed some videotape of the incident from the police vehicle in greater detail and found multiple concerns," E Division Sgt. Rob Vermeulen told ctvbc.ca.
A subsequent charge recommendation against the driver was dropped.
Duran, a six-year member of the force, has been assigned to desk duty pending the outcome of the case. Const. Doylend, who has four years experience, remains on street duty.
Both men face a separate internal code of conduct investigation.
They are slated to appear in Port Coquitlam provincial court on Jan. 20.
