Two children are dead and eight people are in hospital after a weather-related multi-car accident on Vancouver Island.

The crash occurred on the Island Highway, south of Nanaimo, B.C. and near the town of Cassidy at dinnertime. Unconfirmed reports say one car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with several vehicles.

A B.C. Ambulance spokesperson says one air and six ground ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

The eight injured were transported to Nanaimo General Hospital and one was later transferred to Vancouver. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Nanaimo RCMP, fire and ambulance crews responded to the crash by closing the highway in both directions.

Snow and weather conditions are believed to have been a factor.
