A falling tree hitting a power pole is being blamed for a B.C. wildfire that forced more than 70 people from their homes in the province's Okanagan.

The BC Fire Service says the tree fell on a BC Hydro line during gusty winds of up to 70 kilometres an hour on July 12.

The grass fire quickly destroyed one home, two garages as well as one boat and police car.

BC Hydro is now working within the active fire zone to restore power to the area. The agency says numerous power poles that are critical to service in the hilly terrain sustained damage over the past two days.

An evacuation order remains in effect for Seclusion Bay, a small community that sits just north of Peachland, about 350 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.

The 30 hectare fire is said to be 90 per cent contained, however, crews are still actively working to strengthen north and south fire guards to ensure the blaze does not flare up again.

Warmer temperatures are forecast for the region Wednesday.
