VANCOUVER -- A handful of municipalities in British Columbia say they are cancelling summer classes because of a province-wide teachers' strike.
The school districts of Abbotsford, Campbell River, Prince George, Williams Lake and Chilliwack have all posted notices on their websites saying summer classes are cancelled.
But the province's labour board ruled schools must hold summer classes for students in Grades 10 to 12 who failed a course and cannot retake it next year.
Prince George found it does not offer courses fitting this criteria, and will cancel all summer classes.
But Abbotsford superintendent Kevin Godden says courses in his district deemed essential by the board's ruling can be accessed through the district's online learning website.
Chilliwack, Williams Lake and Campbell River did not say if they were offering courses the labour board considers essential.
More than 40,000 teachers across the province went on a full strike on June 17, indefinitely cancelling classes for more than half a million public school students.
