Summer school in the Abbotsford School District has been cancelled according to a letter from the superintendent of the district posted Tuesday.

Academic summer school for Grades 9 through 12 and enhancement summer school for Grades 1 through 8 were cancelled for the Abbotsford District.

The BCTF will be picketing summer schools around British Columbia this summer and on Friday the Labour Relations Board ruled that summer school is only essential for Grade 10, 11 and 12 students who failed a course the previous year.

In a letter to be sent to parents and guardians of students registered in summer school, Abbotsford School District superintendent Kevin Godden wrote that this ruling applies to few students in the Abbotsford program.

“The vast majority of our students take summer school courses for advancement, and not because they have failed,” Godden wrote. “Where applicable, students who failed a grade 10, 11 or 12 course will be able to access it through the district’s distributed learning program (Abbotsford Virtual School).”

Refunds will be issued for any payments or deposits made for summer school. The details and timeline have not yet been worked out.
