VANCOUVER -- The BC Coroners Service says a man shot by police after an armed standoff outside a Metro Vancouver casino two weeks ago was a 48-year-old Richmond, B.C., resident.

Mehrdad Bayrami was shot at the end of a lengthy standoff at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster on Nov. 8 and died in hospital this past Sunday.

Police were first called to the casino after a report of shots being fired and officers found Bayrami in a parking lot.

Police blocked off the area, including closing a major commuter bridge, and spent several hours trying to negotiate with Bayrami before the shooting.

It's not known what motivated Bayrami's actions at the casino.

The Independent Investigations Office has taken over the investigation.
