The man who was gunned down by police during an armed standoff at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster earlier this month has died.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead Sunday in hospital, 11 days after being shot by officers investigating reports of gunfire at the gaming centre.

His family has been notified.

B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office is continuing to probe the fatal confrontation, but few details have been confirmed for the public.

New Westminster police were called to the casino on Nov. 8 after a distraught man with a gun allegedly took a woman hostage.

Witnesses reported hearing screaming and gunshots, and seeing a woman being dragged into the bushes near the casino.

Officers located a man in a parking lot, and a standoff commenced for several hours.

The suspect was shot at around 10:45 a.m. and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

No one else was injured in the incident.
