Suspect in Vancouver 'sucker punch' incident also charged in 2 other random assaults, police say
The suspect arrested last week for allegedly sucker-punching a stranger in downtown Vancouver has been charged in a total of three separate stranger assaults, police announced Tuesday.
Zachary Tyrell Shettell has been charged with three counts of assault, according to a statement from the Vancouver Police Department.
Online court records indicate the 29-year-old has also been charged with theft under $5,000.
Police allege Shettell is the man seen punching a stranger in the face outside the Hudson's Bay store on West Georgia Street in a video the VPD released last week.
The incident seen in the video occurred on Nov. 28. Police made the video public on Dec. 3. That same day, a VPD officer patrolling in the downtown area arrested Shettell near Library Square.
Police announced the arrest on Dec. 4, but did not share Shettell's name. At the time, they said the suspect was being held in custody on other charges, unrelated to the incident captured on video. Police did not elaborate on what those other charges were.
In Tuesday's update, the VPD shared that Shettell is also charged with assaulting a 35-year-old man near the Vancouver Art Gallery on Nov. 24 and a 29-year-old man near the intersection of West Pender and Granville streets on Nov. 25.
"Police do not believe any of the victims knew the suspect or had any prior interaction with him before being assaulted," the VPD said in its statement.
The theft charge, which police did not mention in their statement, stems from an incident that occurred in Vancouver on Nov. 30, according to online court records.
A bail hearing for Shettell was scheduled for Tuesday morning, but has since been pushed to Dec. 17. He will remain in custody while awaiting that court date.
