Mounties have arrested a suspect in the weekend hit-and-run that killed Chilliwack resident Darcy Garnot, but are still asking any potential witnesses to come forward.

Gary Allain, 60, is accused of hitting Garnot from behind at around 8 p.m. Sunday near First Avenue and Nowell Street then fleeing the scene.

The 37-year-old victim was walking on the sidewalk with this girlfriend when he was struck. He was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital where he died of his injuries.

"This is a tragic loss of life and our thoughts are with Darcy's family and friends," Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth said in a statement.

A suspect vehicle was found the morning after the crash, and Allain was arrested and charged with criminal negligence causing death and failure to stop causing death.

He is due to appear in court on May 8.

Police say they are still looking for witnesses, and ask anyone with information on the crash to call RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
