There is some relief tonight for people trying to use transit to avoid the gridlock caused by the Pattullo Bridge closure.
After CTV uncovered a ticketing blitz by the City of Surrey to commuters confused by parking rules in the city at the new park and rides, officials say they are considering changing parking rules.
The city of Surrey and TransLink have found 400 extra parking spaces since the bridge was damaged by fire Jan. 18, but drivers say the spots are poorly advertised and it's hard to find them.
CTV's St. John Alexander pointed out a huge new parking lot to a man looking for parking near Cloverdale.
"Oh yeah? Where?" he asked.
And so even though there are more spaces, there are more crows then cars in the muddy field now allocated as parking.
"That's their solution? You gotta be kidding me!" says Erica Walker.
Those who do make it to the isolated lot are still confused.
"Well yeah, you can see right there temporary parking, but then that one says vehicle will be towed at owner's expense," she says.
On the street, the city changed its parking rules in some areas but not others, causing mass confusion.
Drivers are angry because they say they're doing their part by leaving their cars behind and taking the SkyTrain to work, only to come back to parking tickets
CTV News told the City of Surrey's transportation planner that people are saying the city is trying to make money from the driver's dilemma.
"I know," says Philip Bellefontaine. "I can understand that, but we're not there to make money. Our bylaw enforcement is there to protect those basic functions of the road."
Those basic functions are access to side streets or fire hydrants. Still, people can't understand why this road is an issue and, like it or not, everyone is about to get a ticket.
One man says he doesn't know what else to do.
"It's really tough," he tells CTV News. "I don't know where else we should park."
CTV asked Bellefontaine if this was a time where the city could be a bit more lenient.
"We are," he says. "We're being lenient in that we remove huge amounts of parking controls that currently exist."
After CTV spoke with the city, Surrey agreed to reconsider writing tickets in some areas and promises give a break to some who dispute their fines.
They are considering giving people warnings instead of fines and promise more signs are going up so people know where they can and can't park.
Since Thursday, 360 temporary parking stalls are available free of charge at the Cloverdale Fair Grounds (62nd Avenue & Hwy 15) until construction on the Pattullo Bridge is completed and the bridge re-opens.
