The Pattullo Bridge is being fixed and should reopen in two weeks, but in the meantime the park-and-ride scheme set up in Surry could do with some fixing of its own.

The pile-driving has started on the damaged bridge.

A steel and concrete structure used during the construction of the Canada Line is being put in place to replace the burned-out wooden section of the bridge.

The structure will span the 20-metre gap created by a cooking fire that got out of control on January 18.

But, in the meantime, commuters looking for parking spaces in order to take the SkyTrain from Surrey are still finding it almost impossible.

And in those areas where parking spaces have been created, poor advertising has meant few cars are being parked there.

The Cloverdale Fair Ground did have a sign inviting drivers to park, but few knew about it and only four cars turned up in the massive lot on Thursday morning.

Godfried Lovelac-Dodoo parked his car there and waited for a commuter bus to take him to the SkyTrain station.

One never arrived because it was too late in the morning and they had stopped running.

"Hey guys, when you tell us to come here and get the bus, you better honour your promise," he said with frustration.

There is a lot of confusion elsewhere, with many parking tickets being handed out.

Student Anthony Fiddler had one on his windscreen when he got back to his car from a trip to Vancouver.

"I think it's just something to ruin someone's day. It just doesn't make sense, I don't know there's such a huge crisis and the city keeps giving us tickets," he said.

He's not the only one who got hit.

"I'm probably going to go home and call the city right now and tell them this has to stop," he said.

Starting Thursday, 360 temporary parking stalls will be provided free of charge at the Cloverdale Fair Grounds (62nd Avenue & Hwy 15) until construction on the Pattullo Bridge is completed and the bridge re-opens.
