A police chase that began in New Westminster early Wednesday morning ended with two innocent victims in hospital, one in critical condition, and several cars damaged.
The chase ended on 140th Street, south of 100th Avenue in Surrey when the truck police were pursuing went off the road, through a fence and crashed into the front yard of a home.
Nearby resident Jeri Thomsen said she heard a great big bang at about 2:00 a.m., and went outside to find police cars, lights flashing, and the victims' car badly damaged.
"It was a mess," she said. "It looked like it rolled, too -- the roof was caved in a bit, and the back was hit. It looked like it had been hit a couple times. Either that or it had bounced off the (other) vehicles."
The pickup truck struck three vehicles as it headed south -- two parked vehicles and one car with two women inside. The driver of that car is in critical condition and the passenger suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the truck, and a passenger, tried to escape on foot after crashing their vehicle, but a police dog caught up with the man and woman.
"It's my understanding (the driver) had failed to stop for the New Westminster police, and as well the driver apparently had a warrant," said Insp. Darren Lench of the Surrey RCMP.
New Westminster RCMP began following the truck after they first noticed a possible impaired driver at the North end of the Pattullo Bridge.
"They're innocent," said Thomsen. "Now they've got to pay the price for some idiot who decided they needed to do something bad."
