Fire investigators and Mounties are trying to determine how the same suburban home caught fire twice in 12 hours this weekend.
Port Coquitlam fire crews were first called to the home on Sefton St. around 2 p.m. Saturday.
All of the people inside the home got out safe, and an investigation revealed the blaze was sparked by a candle inside the home.
A restoration company came in and boarded up the doors and windows around 7 p.m., after the investigators left.
Then, around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a person walking their dog smelled smoke and alerted authorities.
Fire crews returned to the home to find flames licking out the second storey, and smoke billowing out of the windows.
Crews were able to pull the plywood off the windows and extinguish the fire. A total of 13 members attacked the house fire.
There was no one home at the time, as the residents left earlier in the day to stay with relatives.
Deputy Chief Robert Kipps said investigators used thermal imaging to confirm the first fire was out, so it’s not known how this second blaze was started. It is being treated as suspicious.
Kipps said the smoke, water and fire damage to the home from both fires is significant.
