A massive hydroelectric dam proposed for northeastern B.C. nearly 40 years ago could finally become a reality today.

Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom will say a decision is imminent but won't confirm the province will announce that it is moving ahead with the $6 billion dollar Site C dam project near Fort St. John.

He does say that if the project is approved it would still require an environmental assessment and broad community consultation.

BC Hydro says the huge dam could power nearly 500,000 homes but critics say the huge reservoir created on the Peace River would flood 5400 hectares of land.
