Metro Vancouver police and fire crews were kept busy late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, responding to assaults, pipe bombs and fires.
At about 2 a.m. Sunday morning, a man told Surrey RCMP that he had been hit with a beer bottle on the L.A. Matheson Secondary school grounds.
A short time later, Surrey RCMP got a call of a man who had been stabbed by numerous assailants.
Police believe both attacks were carried out by the same group of males. Five individuals were taken into custody.
Both victims were taken to hospital and were said to be in stable condition.
Pipebombs
At about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Burnaby RCMP witnessed an improvised explosive device go off in the area of Imperial Street and Royal Oak Avenue.
The explosion shattered the windows of a nearby residence.
A couple blocks away, an officer confronted a man who was acting suspiciously and discovered that the man had two improvised explosive devices on him, police said.
The man was arrested. An explosives-disposal unit was called in.
No one was injured.
Fires
Vancouver police said they responded to several alcohol-fueled disturbances and assaults throughout the city but reported no major incidents.
Vancouver fire officials said crews responded to more than 30 fires, due mainly to improper fireworks use.
Items ignited included five vehicles, Dumpsters, portable toilets, bushes, billboards and mailboxes, officials said.
