Firefighters in Delta are mourning the loss of a veteran teammate who was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Langley Thursday night.
Mark Janson, 54, was walking his dog along 240th Street near 56th Avenue, an area close to his home, when he was hit by the truck.
Investigators say the 24-year-old driver of the truck performed CPR with other witnesses before Janson was rushed to hospital.
He later died from his injuries.
“Our hearts and thoughts are out for Mark and his family,” said Capt. Brad Wilson of the Delta Fire Department. “[His wife] was on scene shortly after, so it must have been very, very hard for her and her son.”
Wilson said Janson has saved numerous lives in his time on the job.
“In the 27 years he’s been doing this job, he’s been to countless calls where people were suffering or hurting,” Wilson said.
The Delta firefighters' union tweeted a message of mourning Sunday, calling Janson an "outstanding member" and thanking supporters for their condolences.
Tough time for us, want to let you all know your support and thoughts are sincerely appreciated. DFD tragically lost an outstanding member.

Langley RCMP said the driver of the truck, who was extremely distraught after the incident, remained at the scene and co-operated with investigators.
In a release sent Friday, police said there are no street lights in the area of the crash, and alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors.
The truck was seized and a mechanical inspection was expected to be performed.
