A Nanaimo, B.C., woman is facing charges in a highway crash that killed two of her children three days before Christmas last year.

Clare Bekkers, 36, is accused of two counts each of impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death.

Seven-year-old Lucas Bekkers and his two-year-old brother, Cooper, died on December 22 when the Ford Escape driven by their mother veered out of control on snowy roads on Highway 1 in the Cassidy area south of Nanaimo.

Two other children in the SUV were also hurt. Bekkers herself was only slightly injured.

The SUV crossed from the northbound lanes into the oncoming southbound traffic, hitting several other vehicles and causing a seven-vehicle crash.

Police say weather and speed were factors in the crash.
