Like many amateur news anchors who step onto CTV's News Star set on Robson Street, they giggled, and they flubbed some of their TelePrompTer lines.
But like any good anchor duo, Karry Kainth and his girlfriend, Prab Dhaliwal, sure had chemistry.
Which is why it was not surprising that when Kainth popped the question from behind the anchor desk Saturday, Dhaliwal said, ‘Yes!'
Before the couple recorded their 30-second fake CTV Olympic news update, a relative who was in on the secret asked CTV staff to keep the cameras rolling.
When Kainth finished delivering his last line, he turned to Dhaliwal.
"And one last thing, sweetheart," Kainth said.
He reached into his sweatshirt pocket and pulled out a ring.
Dhaliwal screamed.
"Oh my god! … You got the ring!"
Before he even had a chance to say, "Will you …," she blurted, "Yes! Yes! Finally!"
Dhaliwal slid on the ring and stretched out her arms to give Kainth a smooch.
CTV staff standing on the set and about 300 spectators watching from Robson Street cheered for the newly engaged couple.
There wasn't a dry eye around, said Roger Lemire, CTV British Columbia's marketing manager, adding that he couldn't recall another couple getting engaged on the outdoor set.
"By doing it online, they have a lot family around the world they can then email the proposal," he said.
Neither Kainth, of Abbotsford, nor Dhaliwal, of Vancouver, could be reached for comment Saturday night.
Lemire said they were seen walking away hand in hand.
