The man charged with murder and attempted murder after driving his truck through a sushi restaurant in Maple Ridge, B.C., last week, finally made his first court appearance in court Friday.

In the last few days, Brian Irving missed scheduled appearances in a Port Coquitlam provincial court due to an undisclosed illness.

The 51-year-old will undergo psychiatric evaluation and a medical assessment to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Prosecutors say Irving has a history of alcoholism and he suffered a brain injury in February.

Irving is facing two counts of second degree murder, and six counts of attempted murder.

Maija-Liisa, a 19-year-old Simon Fraser University student, and 46-year-old Hyeshim Oh died in the crash.
