Vancouver's Olympic Line streetcar service that has carried more than 500,000 people over the last two months will make its final trip on Sunday night.

The 60-day trial run has been operating free of charge 18 hours a day, seven days a week since January 21 using streetcars on loan from Brussels, Belgium.

The line runs between Granville Island and the Canada Line Olympic Village Station at West 2nd Avenue and Cambie Street in six minutes.

The City of Vancouver had considered making the streetcar system permanent, even extending the line to Stanley Park through the downtown core, but says it is unable to fund the project without a substantial investment from the provincial government.

On Sunday, Premier Gordon Campbell said the province was considering the request.

"The minister of transportation is looking at the possibilities for this as a compliment to the existing transit system," Campbell said.

"A major message we've learned from this Olympics is that the public will use transit when it's available."

Vancouver spent $8.5-million upgrading its old rail line to accommodate the streetcars.
