A lucky but embarrassed man was rescued Sunday afternoon by North Shore Search and Rescue after becoming lost overnight on Cypress Mountain.

Lawrence Leong set off for an afternoon hike around 3 p.m. on Saturday from the resort's cross country ski area. He said he had only planned to be hiking for about an hour but got lost.

Leong called 911 several times, but he was out of range and they kept cutting out.

North Shore Search and Rescue began their search for him by ground and air, and around 24-hours later he was located -- dirty, cold, but unharmed.

The 57-year-old lawyer is an experience hiker. He was checked over by first aid staff and given a good talking to by searchers. He was well equipped for his hike, but other errors could have cost him dearly.

"I just made a couple of mistakes, I didn't stick with my plans, Originally I wasn't going to be there for a long time, but I also didn't let anybody know that I was going there," said Leong.

"Anytime you travel in the mountains and go out in the wilderness you have to be responsible for your actions, you need to let a responsible person know where you're going," said George Zahali of North Shore Search and Rescue.

He said with winter fast approaching not following these rules could cost lives.
