John Furlong is the new executive chair of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The former Vancouver Winter Olympics chief replaces Paul Barber, who left the team at the end of February.
The Major League Soccer club announced Furlong's appointment Thursday morning at a downtown hotel.
Furlong oversaw the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Prior to his appointment as the CEO of VANOC, he chaired Vancouver's Olympic bid group.
He has also been a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee and chaired the B.C. Summer Games and Winter Games, as well as Sport B.C.
Furlong co-authored a special report on the 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver, offering recommendations on how to avoid a similar event in the future.
