A former NHL player faces charges of arson after his father’s Langley home was torched in a fire investigators say was deliberately set.

Stephen Boyd Peat turned himself in to Langley RCMP after the blaze devastated the 208A Street home on March 17. Police believe the fire escalated from a domestic dispute between father and son.

The 35-year-old is charged with one count of arson with disregard for human life and one count of arson causing damage to property.

A witness told police they saw a suspect sparking the fire and tried unsuccessfully to intervene. No one was injured.

Peat, a right-winger, spent parts of four seasons with the Washington Capitals in the early 2000s, playing a total of 130 NHL games.

He has been released from custody into treatment for undisclosed issues and will make his next court appearance on April 25.
