A Vancouver student is reeling from the loss her aunt, who was shot and killed in what appears to be a disturbing case of domestic violence.

Hue Ngoc Nguyen, 41, was found dead inside her Calgary home on May 24.

Her common law husband, Hien Tuan Lam, is charged with first-degree murder, as well as attempted murder. He has also been accused of shooting and injuring the couple’s 15-year-old daughter.

Police say Lam took off with the couple’s 11-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, but later surrendered to police.

Niece Michelle Nguyen, 20, told CTV News she stayed with her aunt over the May long weekend. Hours after returning to Vancouver, she learned of the shooting.

“I lost my mom when I was younger, and she treated me like her own child. I saw her as my mom,” said niece Michelle Nguyen, tearing up.

“Even if you didn't know her personally you can see her radiance shining from her, because she was so wonderful… everybody loved her.”

Michelle says her aunt’s three children were “her world, and meant everything to her.” A GoFundMe account has been set up for the kids, who are now staying with other family members.
