An elderly couple has died following an overnight house fire in West Vancouver, B.C.

The blaze broke out around 2 a.m. in a two-storey home in the 6200-block of Overstone Drive near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.

West Vancouver Fire and Rescue responded after receiving a call from a nearby resident who reported seeing smoke and flames in the sky. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames billowing from the centre of the residential home.

Crews found an elderly unconscious woman shortly after entering the burning home. She was pulled outside of the building and given emergency medical treatment. She died at the scene.

An 81-year-old man was found dead inside the home shortly after.

The identities of the victims are being withheld at the request of their family.

West Vancouver Police, West Vancouver Fire and Rescue and the BC Coroner's Service are all investigating. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigators are expected to remain at the residence for most of the day.
