A fatal crash closed part of a road in Port Moody Sunday as crews tried to lift the wreckage of a pick-up truck out of a steep embankment.

Witnesses say the truck was travelling westbound on David Avenue near Forest Park Way at around 2 a.m. when it hit a curb and rolled down the embankment and into Noons Creek, killing the driver.

The crash woke up nearby residents who rushed to the scene.

“My wife thought it might be another tree that had fallen so I got the flashlight out,” said Duane Stanley. “It was as a pretty big bang.”

The City of Port Moody shut down David Avenue to traffic for hours Sunday as crews worked to retrieve the smashed-up truck with a crane.

The road eventually reopened at around 3:50 p.m.

Port Moody police are investigating the incident and tweeted condolences to the victim’s family Sunday.

Police say speed was likely a factor in the crash, and an investigation into the cause is underway. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed.
