VICTORIA -- Police rescued a pair of dogs from a sweltering car in downtown Victoria on Monday.
Temperatures inside the black sedan parked in the 500 block of Discovery Street were reportedly approaching 60 degrees celsius when a passerby spotted the two dogs and called the police.
The owner of the vehicle was nowhere to be found, so police smashed the window to get the dogs out. The dogs were hot, but they’ll be OK.
Leaving dogs in cars is not against the law, but there are rules for doing it safely.
“You have to provide adequate ventilation, there has to be water provided to the animal, and also the vehicle has to be parked in the shade,” said Victoria Animal Control Officer Ian Fraser. “Two of those three elements were not provided to these dogs.”
This is not the first incident this year to prompt reminders to the public about the dangers of leaving animals in hot cars. Back in May, police determined that six dogs found dead in a ditch in Abbotsford had died from heat exhaustion after being left in the back of a pickup truck.
