It’s a taken thousands of foodies to world-famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Lincoln Center and Place des Arts.
Now the secretive flash-mob dinner party known as Diner en Blanc is coming to Vancouver.
At 6 p.m. Thursday, 1,200 diners chicly dressed head to toe white (no baseball caps allowed!) will be meeting in small groups at various locations around the city carrying picnic dinners, their own tables, chairs and white tablecloths. They’ll then walk or take chartered buses to an as-yet-undisclosed location where they’ll set up, take their seats simultaneously and enjoy an al fresco meal, a “sparkler toast” and post-dinner dancing.
Only white china, glass or crystal are allowed and plastic dinnerware of any kind is forbidden. Diners who haven’t bought into the optional catered meal have been directed to bring three-course meals they’ve brought themselves, with French cuisine encouraged.
The concept for the event started in Paris more than 20 years ago when a handful of friends led by Francois Pasquier enjoyed an outdoor meal together. The event now takes places in dozens of cities in the world, with Vancouver joining Toronto, Boston and Singapore as first-time host cities this year.
CTV’s Penny Daflos will live-tweet the event as an embedded journalist. You can follow her via @PennyDaflos for up to the minute details, photos and insight as a participant.
