Conservation officers have killed a cougar thought to be responsible for killing two goats in Maple Ridge, B.C.

The officers found the cougar near Dewdney Trunk Road in the east side of the city Thursday morning. They tracked animal with dogs, and then shot and killed it.

On Tuesday, area resident Cindy Hoslin had a close encounter with a cougar in her yard, after it killed two pet goats. Her home is directly adjacent to an elementary school and a daycare centre.

However, the officers aren't entirely sure the cougar they shot is the same one that killed Hoslin's goats.

"The conservation officers feel that there was only one cougar in the area, but no one can be 100 per cent certain of that," RCMP Insp. Derren Lench said in a statement.

"Therefore we want to caution people in the area to be on the lookout for any cougars, and take proper precautions, and call us, or B.C. Conservation, if they see one."
