Christmas tree chipping events held around Vancouver
A steady stream of non-perishable food and cash donations flowed into the parking lot at Trout Lake Community Centre Saturday for the first day of annual Lions Club tree chipping events in Vancouver.
Wood chippers were also on hand in the parking lots of King George Secondary School, Kitsilano Beach and Magee Secondary School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will be out again during the same hours on Sunday.
Lions clubs, fire departments and other charitable groups held tree chipping events across Metro Vancouver on Saturday, with more scheduled for Sunday in some cities.
For those unable to make it to a tree disposal event this weekend – or not yet ready to say goodbye to their Christmas trees – a variety of other options are available.
In the City of Vancouver, residents with municipal green bin service are welcome to chop up their trees and dispose of them in the green bin.
The city will also be taking trees through curbside pickup beginning on Jan. 11 and continuing through the end of the month. Trees must be placed alongside municipal bins by 7 a.m. on Jan. 11 to guarantee pickup, the city says.
Christmas trees can also be dropped off for free at the Vancouver South transfer station or the Vancouver Landfill in Delta until Jan. 31.
