This spring Olsen on Your Side told you about a Canadian-made grill that started to melt during Consumer Reports' tests.
The makers of the Broil King Signet 90 voluntarily recalled the grill and came out with a retrofit-kit.
During consumer reports' grill tests earlier this year, the Broil King Signet 90 had a serious problem.
During a routine flare-up test, the bottom of the grill's firebox began melting.
The damage was obvious to the eye. Molten metal actually dripped down under the grill, barely missing the hand of one of the testers.
Consumer reports tested three Broil King Signet 90's and all had problems.
Consumer reports judged the Broil King Signet 90, model number 986784lp, "not acceptable" and notified its Canadian maker, Onward Manufacturing.
The grill was voluntarily recalled in May.
The company developed a retrofit kit consisting of a stainless-steel baffle to put in the bottom of the firebox.
Consumer reports tested the kit, which was sent free to people who own the grill.
The company is also including it with new grills.
In one test on a grill bought after the recall, the kit worked well.
Although there was quite a bit of flare up, there was no damage to the firebox.
Consumer reports also tested the retrofit kit on this grill bought before the recall. On this one the firebox deformed.
" We expect any product fix to provide consistent results. In this case, the variable results give us concern, " said Bob Markovich of Consumer Reports.
The Broil King Signet 90, model number 986784lp, is no longer judged not acceptable. But Consumer Reports says if you own the grill take these precautions.
"Be sure to install the retrofit kit. Inspect the firebox periodically for signs of damage. And avoid cooking on the highest heat setting called Pow-r-zone, " advises Bob Markovich.
