The driver involved in a fatal crash in the Massey Tunnel Monday night died from crash injuries and a fire resulting from the accident, according to RCMP.
Witnesses say a 1981 Volkswagen pickup truck was swerving as it headed into the Massey Tunnel, under the Fraser River in Richmond, at about 8:30 last night.
The northbound vehicle careened off the walls, eventually slamming into another car before bursting into flames.
RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said witnesses tried to help the driver, but there was little they could do.
The accident forced the closure of the tunnel, a major commuter route, for several hours.
The driver's identity will be released pending next of kin notification. Deas Island Traffic Services are investigating the cause of the crash.
The tunnel is about 20 kilometres south of Vancouver.
