A Canada Post worker accused of stealing a FedEx package from the front step of a Metro Vancouver home is off the job as the Crown corporation investigates.
Surveillance cameras recorded the woman attempting to make a delivery to the Coquitlam property on Nov. 3, then appearing to walk off with a small, plastic package that had been delivered by FedEx earlier in the day.
CTV News brought the incident to Canada Post's attention on Wednesday, and one day later the company confirmed the woman in the video has been identified and taken off the job.
"That employee is not out delivering today," spokesman Jon Hamilton said. "It was disappointing to receive that video but we took immediate action and we began an investigation to figure out what happened."
The homeowner told CTV News he wouldn't have been very surprised to be the victim of mail theft, but was shocked to watch his surveillance video and see a Canada Post employee was the apparent culprit.
He has yet to contact the RCMP or Canada Post directly to report his concerns, but said he believes the public should be aware of what happened.
Canada Post said it takes the incident very seriously, and that it hopes it won't undercut the public's trust in its delivery operations.
"Canadians have a high level of trust for Canada Post and that's been built over their entire lives, with our people working hard to deliver safe and securely the items they order, the items they're expecting," Hamilton said. "Obviously this is a video that doesn’t look good on Canada Post, we certainly understand that, but our people do a great job."
