Police in Chilliwack, B.C., say that a drunk driver is to blame for a weekend crash that left a teenaged pedestrian with several broken bones.

The 15-year-old boy was walking on the side of Chilliwack River Road around 4:40 p.m. on Saturday when police say he was hit by a grey Chevrolet Cobalt trying to pass another vehicle on the right-hand shoulder.

Witnesses had called police to report the same vehicle driving erratically just 10 minutes before the crash.

The victim was taken to BC Children's Hospital, where RCMP say he remains in stable condition.

The 48-year-old driver, a resident of Fort McMurray, Alta., was arrested at the scene of the crash, and is scheduled to appear in provincial court Monday. Police are recommending charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm.

"The driver, in his suspected impaired state, showed a complete disregard for safety," Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop said in a press release.
