The fire that destroyed a restaurant in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown on Tuesday was accidentally started by roofers.
More than 60 firefighters fought to knock down the blaze at Daisy Garden Restaurant on East Pender Street, but the building was destroyed as flames quickly consumed the building.
Plumes of smoke were visible across the city for most of the afternoon, and neighbouring buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
After the roof collapsed, Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services decided to demolish the building “to protect the adjacent buildings and the public.”
Investigators have determined that the fire was accidentally sparked during re-roofing work. Firefighters say the roofing crew tried to douse the flames themselves before they alerted authorities.
No injuries were reported.
