B.C. Liberal MLA Sindi Hawkins is fighting leukemia for the third time, the premier announced Tuesday.

"It is with a heavy heart that we've learned our good friend and colleague Sindi Hawkins is once again fighting to overcome the challenges she faces with leukemia," Gordon Campbell said in a statement.

He said the Kelowna politician will be starting treatment in the coming weeks.

Hawkins was first diagnosed with the cancer in 2004. In December, she received a second bone marrow transplant with cells donated by her sister.

Throughout her ordeal Hawkins has displayed a remarkable attitude, encouraging people to donate blood for cancer treatment and raising over $20 million for research.

Campbell said that in lieu of flowers, Hawkins's family has requested donations be made to the B.C. Cancer Foundation's Sindi Hawkins and Friends education endowment fund.

Hawkins recently retired after 13 years of public service, and the premier and other MLAs will be among those attending a farewell dinner for her on April 2.
