A Sunshine Coast drug addiction clinic once tied to marijuana activist Marc Emery is being scrutinized by Vancouver Coastal Health.
Iboga Therapy House charges $5,000 for five days of treatment using what it terms a psychoactive substance found in the root of the Iboga plant, native to West Africa.
Sunshine Coast Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Martiquet says the clinic is not funded or licensed and inspectors would like to ensure it meets appropriate standards - but they don't know where it's located.
Martiquet says clinic program director Sandra Karpetas, a former assistant of Emery, has assured officials the clinic is not operating right now and, if it were, it would only treat one patient at a time.
He cautions prospective patients to check out the treatment thoroughly before taking the substance.
Emery helped found Iboga Therapy House as a free service nearly eight years ago but says he is no longer involved with the operation.
