Tens of thousands of British Columbia drivers are waiting to hear if their vehicle is among the 270,000 recalled by the company nationwide this week because of a faulty accelerator pedal.

The recall affects the Toyota Corolla, Rav4, Camry, Matrix, Avalon, Highlander and Sequoia models.

Mary Douglas says she’s disappointed her car dealer didn’t tell her about the recall when she purchased a Toyota Rav4 last week. Douglas said her car dealer assured her they didn’t know about the recall.

The dealer confirmed Thursday she does have one of the affected gas pedals but because she has such low mileage she can continue to drive it until a part comes in.

She's nervous.

“I’m going to feel very uncomfortable driving until the part comes in until they can replace it and fix it,” she said.

CTV News phoned Toyota Canada but weren't able to confirm whether low mileage is a factor. They said “where necessary a dealer can offer a customer a loaner or rental vehicle at no charge.”

Douglas was encouraged to call Toyota’s customer service line at 1-888-TOYOTA8.

After having the gas pedal of her 2009 Toyota Corolla stick this summer, Abbotsford resident Michelle O'Doherty found out her car is among affected vehicles. Her dealer said she'll have to wait at least ten days for a new part.

She’s hoping she'll be near the front of the line to get the new part installed.

“Every day I worry about myself and everyone on the road with me,” she said.

If your vehicle suddenly accelerates, drivers are advised to apply the brakes firmly and put the car in neural without taking you foot off the brake. The engine will rev but you’ll be able to bring the car to a safe stop and turn it off.
