A New Westminster police officer has been found guilty in the 2009 beating of a newspaper delivery driver.
Const. Jeffrey Klassen got into a confrontation with 47-year-old Surrey resident Firoz Khan after a night of heavy drinking on Jan. 20, 2009.
Khan was assaulted late at night while he was delivering newspapers in downtown Vancouver. Klassen was out drinking with two other off-duty officers and several friends at a club on Granville Street shortly before the time of the attack.
Klassen admitted "feeling buzzed" after having as many as 11 beers over the course of roughly eight hours.
There is also a separate Police Act investigation into the assault.
New Westminster Police Service Sgt. Gary Weishaar says the force will review Klassen's employment status when the internal probe is completed. The officer is currently suspended from active duty.
Klassen is the second officer to be convicted in the case.
Constable Griffin Gillan of the West Vancouver Police Department was given a 21-day conditional sentence after pleading guilty to the assault.
Gillan testified that he consumed more than 20 drinks that night, and said he couldn't remember the incident.
