Police say alcohol was not a factor in a horrible fatal accident in which a man was hit by a car and then dragged underneath a bus south of Vancouver.

Police say it appears the victim was struck Saturday night, first by a motorist who returned to the scene but could find only a jacket and a shoe.

Investigators believe that after the first accident, the victim became caught in the under-carriage of a passing bus and was dragged five kilometres along Highway 99 between Delta and Richmond, B.C.

Earlier, police said the victim had been taken into police custody for public intoxication before the fatal accident . He was taken to hospital for an assessment but left before being seen by a doctor.

He was later picked up again after a disturbance at a recreational centre and dropped off at a bus stop.

Police have identified the 53-year-old man but are not releasing his name at the request of his family.
