The Ottawa Senators are giving away free beer at Monday’s home opener, and CTV News has uncovered hints that Vancouver Canucks fans may be treated to the same frosty freebie.

Since the lockout ended, teams across the NHL have announced promotions and discounts aimed at winning back the fans forced to wait through an extended off-season. But the Senators pulled ahead of the pack Friday by revealing every fan of legal drinking age will be handed a free 14 oz. Molson Canadian draft at the team’s first home game.

So, what about the Canucks?

There’s no official confirmation yet, but the B.C. government told CTV News it’s advised Rogers Arena that, as a licensed venue, it’s allowed to hand out free beer to customers should it choose to do so.

“Rogers has indicated they will have controls in place to prevent over-service and service to minors,” the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch added in an email.

The Canucks were asked about the potential promotion multiple times Friday, and offered no denials.

“We still have several initiatives and surprises we are working on for opening night,” the franchise said in a statement.

The Canucks have already announced there will be $1 concession snacks at the first three home games, and team merchandise will be sold at half-price.

The team is also allowing fans to watch practice sessions for free.

The Canucks’ opener against the Anaheim Ducks is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.
