Friends and family are mourning a 19-year-old university radio host who was fatally struck by a car Thursday night in one of the Fraser Valley’s most dangerous intersections.
Emergency responders were called to Marshall and McCallum roads in Abbotsford shortly before 10 p.m. and found Dakota Leslie severely injured with several people trying to help him.
Leslie was rushed to hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours Friday.
A memorial has been growing at the scene since to pay tribute to a young man friends describe as an outgoing, altruistic person who was always happy to help others.
“He was there for anybody who needed him and he never asked for anything in return,” friend Jayce Crossen said.
“He wanted to start charities or help people in Nepal after the earthquake but he didn’t get to.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Leslie’s manager at CIVL, the University of the Fraser Valley’s student radio station.
Police are still trying to piece together what caused the crash, which occurred at one of Abbotsford’s 10 most dangerous intersections, but said the 20-year-old driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating.
A longboard was also found at the scene, but it’s unclear whether it belonged to Leslie.
