One woman is dead after a high-speed car crash in downtown Victoria.

According to police, alcohol and speed contributed to the crash, which happened just after midnight on Sunday.

Police said the 20-year-old Saanich woman, who was a passenger in the car, died at the scene.

The newer model white sedan was travelling at 130 km per hour when it hit a light stand at the intersection of Blanshard and Bay streets.

The 24-year-old male driver, also from Saanich, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The road was closed for several hours. So far no charges have been laid.
