The final design plan for a new park in downtown Vancouver was approved by the Park Board Monday evening, setting the stage for a parking lot to become green space.

The 0.8-acre park will open in 2018 at Smithe and Richards streets and will be the first new park in the downtown core since Emery Barnes Park, which started development 13 years ago.

“It features a unique five-metre high elevated walkway offering bird’s–eye views of the entire park and large overhead ‘sky-frames’ or arches that can support specialty overhead lighting and ephemeral art installations,” said Vancouver Park Board Chair Sarah Kirby-Yung in a release.

The design will also include a community long table below a canopy of trees, a children’s play area, and a civic plaza with a water feature and a food and drink kiosk.

The park will cost an estimated $6 million and construction is expected to begin next spring.
